Lets Kick Butt Together!

Working out as a family is really important not only for togetherness, but to teach our children that being active and fit can be fun.  Not only that, it is best to practice what we preach.  By that I mean, that if our kids see us being active then that will resonate to them.  Being healthy is more than just aesthetics, it is about our well being.  The other day, I had a talk with my husband about the importance of living well.  With certain diseases and ailments that run in my family, I feel it necessary to stay active and fit.  I have seen what sickness and disease can do to people.  I am sure we all have.  It is the worst thing in the world to see family suffer and hurt from sickness.  Having to deal with dialysis every day, various medications, shots, sleep apnea, or even migraines are things you don’t want your family to go through especially your kids.  It hurts me to see people suffer from sickness especially if it is preventable.  Now we can’t prevent ALL diseases by living a healthy lifestyle, but why not try?  So what are ways or ideas you can stay healthy as a family?  Working out as a family is a start.  Here are a couple ideas.

Martial Arts- These programs are great for families.  They even gear classes towards working out as a family.  I would suggest this to anyone who is would like to do a fun activity as a family.  You get the physical activity but you also gain knowledge.  Another benefit is that it teaches our kids discipline.  Besides that, the kids get a kick out of competing against each other and who has a higher ranking belt than the other.  Don’t worry about the kids getting a big ego either.  Taekwondo especially teaches humility.  If you have daughters, having them know how to defend themselves is an added bonus.

5k Family Runs-These events are great to do on a Saturday as a family.  You don’t even have to run.  Walk it as a family or just put the kids in the stroller.  You are moving and being active as a family.  There are always 5ks going on especially now.  A good source to use to find run/races in your local area is Active.com If you do choose to walk, take the time to talk to your kids and catch up.  As busy moms, we can get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of life that we sometimes to REALLY listen.  So take the opportunity to reconnect if necessary.

Remember promoting good health is just as important as teaching our kids about manners and other things about life.  Not only will we and our kids be healthy, but we will get another added benefit which I like to call confidence.  This is really important for our kids because they are so impressionable and will be better equipped to withstand the temptation of the media and their peers.
