Taking the Leap Into “Vanhood”?
At some point in each growing family, there comes the decision to invest in a SUV or take the leap into what I like to call “Vanhood”. It can be a hard decision to make for some families…especially for the one who will be driving it. It can be an even harder decision for mothers that might be “younger”. The decision usually boils down to practicality (that would be the
van) or aesthetics (the SUV).
My family and I had came to that point recently….and yes I made the leap (with A LOT of resistance). I must admit that I did not at all like the thought of myself rolling around in a “mom van”. I was worried that it would mess up my swag (Hey! I had a little swagger). Thoughts of driving a big mom van did not appeal to me at all….what was next? Mom jeans? Let’s be honest, vans do have a stigma behind them like you are old or a soccer mom. I think I was trying to hold on to something that I was past at this point. And what for? Does it really matter how others see me? Not really. I do however, get teased by my coworkers.
Now I am at peace with the decision, and it has been one of the best decisions I ever made. It is so easy to get the kids in and out of the vehicle vs. the SUV we had before. Just getting them into our old SUV was a chore and left me tired before I even started the day. No more having to swing to heavy SUVdoors to open and close heavy SUV doors. Now I just push a button and the doors close with no effort from me. Another thing that I love is that there is just so much ROOM. I throw the kids stuff in the van and still have plenty of room for my gym bag, purse, and work bag. It’s just plain easy. And the kids love it! They always want to take the “big frog car”. I have a frog themed van…I had to put some swag on it.
Though it was a tough decision, I am definitely glad we took the leap. Are you thinking about taking the leap into Vanhood? What say ye?

I can only imagine how you felt when you got it but I’m glad that it doesn’t matter what others think!

You look fantastic next to your “Mom Van!” And in no way do you look like an “old Mom,” trust me (this is coming from a true “old Mom”). What kind of van did you get? I’m facing the same decision myself, so any input is good.

Thanks! We end up getting a Kia Sedona. We were torn between the Kia Sedona and the Dodge Caravan. We liked how the Dodge Caravan looked but when we actually sat in it, it didn’t have as much room as we would think. Before we had a Dodge Journey but quickly ran out of room with our growing family. It didn’t seem much bigger than the Dodge Journey. We sat in the Kia Sedona and it had a lot more room. It is also good on gas which is always good. It has a lot of features that we like to and the kids love it. They are much more comfortable.
